In tribute to the legendary TD 150 and TD 160 models from the 60s and 70s, THORENS has completely reinterpreted the theme of the lower sub-chassis by developing an ultimate sub-chassis turntable featuring state-of-the-art materials. During the development of the new turntable series, emphasis was placed on sound fidelity and dynamics. Of course, we also took into account factors such as ease of use, a modern yet classic design, and a variety of accessories—all while maintaining the traditional principle of the floating chassis.

New Materials

The weight-optimized sub-chassis is made of triCom, a composite material based on aluminum and POM, characterized by excellent damping properties and high rigidity. To avoid any vibration, the synchronous AC motor is mounted directly on the damped sub-chassis and connected via a precision drive belt to the lower platter.

New Architecture

The sub-chassis suspension is provided by three adjustable conical springs at the top for even tension. The flexibility of the sintered bronze main bearing and its Teflon mirror has been optimized. The steel shaft inside the bearing generates very low but constant friction, ensuring good load distribution. Two of the three chassis feet can be leveled from above, making it easier to install the turntable. Depending on the model, different damping systems, mounting plates, and platters are used. The special design of the turntable allows for the installation of 9” and 10” tonearms from different manufacturers.
